What Is Going On with This Family?

Pat Kennedy needs help:

According to the report, Sgt. Kenneth Weaver said he saw Kennedy's vehicle "traveling at a high rate of speed in a construction zone and also swerving into the wrong lane of travel" with its lights off.

Weaver said Kennedy's vehicle hit a curb and swerved back into the wrong lane. He said he was driving east and used "evasive maneuvers in order to avoid a collision" with Kennedy's car.

The officer said he turned around and pursued Kennedy, whose car did not stop but did slow, "finally stopping after colliding head-on with a vehicle barrier."

The report said that when Weaver approached Kennedy, he noticed that his "eyes were red and watery, speech was slightly slurred, and upon exiting his vehicle, his balance was unsure."
And it looks like he's getting it:

U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy said Friday that he will enter a rehabilitation program after crashing his car on Capitol Hill a day earlier.
Two questions linger:

  • The press seems to be being awfully nice about all this. Why?

Police labor union officials said earlier that officers were told not to give Rep. Kennedy a sobriety test after his traffic mishap.

Superiors told the officers instead to drive Kennedy home after the accident, according to Greg Baird, acting chairman of the U.S. Capitol Police union, who called for an inquiry.
Shouldn't the story lead be about the attempt at a cover-up instead of being about him going into rehab? If a Republican had been involved in something similar, I think the tone of coverage would be much different.
  • What is the deal with the Kennedy family? What in their family culture causes so many of them to act with egregious irresponsibility? There is a major dysfunction here--one hopes it does not persist into future generations.

Well, it's already well into its third generation... As long as the electorate keeps returning them all to high office on the strength of that Kennedy name, why should they ever feel the need to change? :-P

Nice blog! I followed your "cheap coffee maker" link from Instapundit. I'll be back!

See "Mary in LA's" comment above, Freeman? She's dead-on, so I need not add -- AND I found your blog via Glenn also -- AND I'll be back too! [channeling Mary?]

Ditto to the 2 above!

As for the Kennedys, the family is deeply dysfunctional with inbred amorality. I don't mean the immature boys cheating on wives thing per se; I mean all the men not emotionally and mentally maturing past age 14, and all their women and society at large enabling it. The Kennedy men, like Democrats generally, seem congenitally incapable of behaving like adults and taking responsibility for their actions. There is a pathological strain of arrogance mixed with elitism, immaturity and (certainly in the Kennedy clan) mental deficiency. That New England voters put up with this (and by their actions condone and encourage it) explains so much about New England specifically and the Blue State mentality in general.
