McCain the Weathervane

John McCain contributes a guest post at Porkbusters (via Glenn):

So why has my party, the party of small government, lately adopted the practices of our opponents who believe the bigger the government the better? I'm afraid it's because at times we value our incumbency more than our principles.
No kidding. And this coming from one of the chief architects of Campaign Finance Reform AKA The Incumbency Protection Act.

I am not a McCain fan, however, at least if McCain is getting behind efforts like Porkbusters, you can guess that there is a shift in momentum going on somewhere in Congress. Maybe one can even hope for some media attention on the issue.

I must admit the only thing I like about Sen. McCain is when he carries the anti-pork banner. I can't really believe a politician so obviously interested in his own incumbency is worried about anything other than courting the Republican base(that can only be described as ambivalent towards him). A base so fed up with federal spending that by picking up the anti-pork issue McCain can to do all sorts of political acrobats for the center left. He knows we will grudgingly welcome any prominent figure to speak out against the Feds pork addiction no matter how calculated it is.

Is McCain's opposition to pork calculated? I don't think so. He's been carrying this banner for years even before it was popular. Let's give credit where credit is due.

Is McCain's entry into the blogosphere calculated?

Well, approximately a week after claiming to "entertain any questions, comments..." there is no response from McCain, any of his staffers, or even anyone claiming to be a McCain staffer (heh, no fake ones even).

His idea of give and take seems to be to give his opinion and calmly stroll away. Typical politician, but if you expected better then you might be disappointed.

Of course if he simply used the Porkbuster site to run a press release with a claim he had no intention of honoring, why do you expect different from him on any other issue?
