The race is over. Get used to typing "President Thompson."
UPDATE: A way to make it happen.

UPDATE 2: Welcome Instapundit readers! Glenn says it's too early to call it, but I think Thompson's entry into the Presidential race is akin to Schwarzenegger's entry into the California Governor's race. Easy call.

I hope you're right. We could certainly do much worse.
My new book on Fred Thompson - Who Is Fred Thompson? Tennessee Bloggers Debate the Candidate's Conservative Credentials - is on sale now from New Pamphleteer Press, for $4 per copy - and you get an instant e-edition to download too.
Buy it at this link: http://store.pamphleteerpress.com/09.html
I also have a website for the book - www.whoisfredthompson.com
Feel free to help me promote the book!
By way of intro, I'm a well-known Tennessee political blogger (www.billhobbs.com) and will as of Oct. 29 be the communications director for the Tennessee Republican Party.
Thank you,
Bill Hobbs
From your blog to God's ears. President Thompson - it has such a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
I watched his announcement on Leno and I thought he did wonderfully. I just don't get some of the negative reactions he had from conservatives - minor though they were talking about his weight and his monotone voice. Heck, he felt like a real person - someone I could trust. And I bet a lot of Americans feel that way today.
BTW, I didnt' see the "former atheist" description until after I posted that last comment. LOL
I already went to Cafepress and made myself bumper stickers identifying myself as a "fRED state voter."
Fred Thompson is God in my part of Tennessee and I believe you are correct.
Aren't you suppossed to, like, you know, tell us why or something?
My new book on Fred Thompson...
Spam.
But... but... but... this is impossible. Only RON PAUL can save America. Only RON PAUL is a REAL AMERICAN. What will Mr. Fred do in our battle against UFOs and Jews and CIA agents who blew up the WTC?
Aren't you suppossed to, like, you know, tell us why or something?
"Supposed" to? I didn't realize I was "supposed" to be doing anything on my own blog.
Spam.
Heh. Bill Hobbs spam is welcome here.
I think you are correct.
As for reasons, well, take Senator Clinton's negatives and Fred's positives and do the math.
I am voting for him because he is conservative. My former wife, a liberal, is voting for him because he is from Tennessee and she is a big Law and Order fan.
Go figure, but a charismatic person gets votes based on their charisma.
President Thompson. I hope we are right.
Trey
I'm voting for him because I'm a conservative. My ex-wife is voting for him because she prefers older, softspoken men, unlike me, my older daughter is voting for him because she likes men who stand for America's national security without being a warhawk. My son is voting for him because he's a Democrat who hasn't figured out he can't be a conservative in that party. And my younger daughter is voting for him because I told her to (well, she's also a conservative who admires men who believe God shouldn't be dismissed from the public forum). So Fred Wins.
"President Thompson" doesn't sound bad at all. However, "Mister Thompson,Head of The State" seems to remind me of something I read somewhere...
While I concur that we could do worse, the way Thompson has been non-campaigning displays some unpleasant disorganization...
In the immortal words of the Harvard Lampoon...
Fortune strums a mournful tune,
To those whose campaigns peak too
soon.
Thanks, Freeman. I don't think it was spam, just after I read your post by following the Insta-link it occurred to me that other blog-readers of your blog might be interested in a book about Fred as seen through the eyes of bloggers.
If Fred really gets it in gear the way he did in that Senate race against Cooper, he wins in a landslide. Much as the Left thinks it is ascendant in American politics, the truth is the "Reagan Democrats" are still out there by the millions, and they will become Thompson Democrats in the months ahead.
President Thompson? Nope, sorry. Too old. His energy level is low and he doesn't really have the "fire in his belly." He'll do well, for a few weeks. Then fizzle out.
People said Reagan was too old.
comatus,
Oh, c'mon, he couldn't be that bad ... could he?
... and I hope I'm not the only one who got your reference!

Not to hoark my own stuff (Ok, not really my stuff, but stuff I hoarked from someone else, but lent attribution to), but I must disagree.

I'm not nearly as old as Fred, but from the looks of her, I don't think Mrs. Thompson thinks her hubby is "old", has a "low energy level", or no "fire in his belly". In fact, she appears to be thinking exactly the opposite.
Rudy is a somebody because he tamed one of the most famously out-of-control cities in the world and demonstrated unusual grace and courage on September 11th. John McCain is a somebody because of a long, distinguished senate career and the fact that he survived six years in the Hanoi Hilton. Mitt Romney is a somebody because he made a fortune in business and has used that to buy his way into public life.
Fred Thompson is a somebody because he played a guy on TV who did what Giuliani did in real life. Really, take away L&O, and Thompson is just another prominent retired Nashville attorney.
Don't get me wrong--I don't hold his acting career against him--but given the fact that his career in the senate lacks any sign of the extraordinary, and that his career prior to it shows little sign of deep interest in the issues of the day (contrast this to Reagan's speeches as a GE spokesperson long before his political career took off), you can understand why I consider him almost criminally lightweight.
Like Obama, he needs a governorship or something to develop his executive potential; unlike Obama, he's too old to take a second bite at the apple.
"I just don't get some of the negative reactions he had from conservatives "
They aren't simply negative reactions. They are campaign strategies. Those leaving such comments are actively working to advance another candidate. And it's not necessarily a Republican one.
Statements like this:
"Fred Thompson is a somebody because he played a guy on TV who did what Giuliani did in real life. Really, take away L&O, and Thompson is just another prominent retired Nashville attorney. "
...demonstrate either ignorance or blind devotion to another candidate. Fred Thompson was a US Attorney, same as Giuliani. Thompson then went on to work on the investigation of Richard Nixon during Watergate and took down a corrupt Governor. Oh, and then he spent 8 years in the Senate working on NATIONAL issues while Giuliani was puttering around NYC. Has Giuliani ever been out of NYC for more than 48 hours? Would Giuliani ever be a candidate if not for the attack on 9/11 shortly before he left office?
But then I doubt the comment was left by a Giuliani supporter. I'm guessing it comes from a liberal.
Fred too old? Fred is about 2 years older than Giuliani, about 6 years younger than McCain, is younger than Reagan was when elected, and is only about 5 years older than Hillary. And since when do we want younger, less experienced people to have jobs where they could, oh, I don't know, LAUNCH NUCLEAR WEAPONS?
Give me seasoned over whelpish anyday.
Always be cautious when reading the "anti-Fred" statements. Sure, some might be legitimate concerned conservative Republicans. But many more are doubtless plants by liberal trolls looking to upset our primaries.
