Happy New Year!

I looked at the Sitemeter statistics for this year and found that this blog had, by far, more visits in June than any other month. What in the world did I post in June? This. Heh.

Ann Althouse has put together a fun list of quotes from 2007. Enjoy.

How was your 2007? Mine was great. If yours wasn't, cast it off! Here comes 2008!

May the new year bring good times for those in bad, and better times for those in good.

It's All Right to Play Fight

Great news that you probably already suspected was true. I hope this also applies to the library of John Wayne movies we've been building up at our house. What are some of your kids' favorite movies featuring adventure or heroism?

John Locke, Anyone?

Well, not only John Locke. He just happened to be the author I was looking for. I liked the little subject tags in this HTML version of Some Thoughts Concerning Education, so I printed the whole thing to a PDF and uploaded it to Kinko's. Bound and ready the next day. Pretty cheap too. I'm going to have to do that with more public domain material. I get tired of reading books on screen.

ADDED: Did you know Locke came up with an ingenious little way to organize a notebook?

Today Is My Birthday

Hooray! I am twenty-eight.

Can you imagine...

... if the choice comes down to Hillary versus Huckabee? Surely not.

A race like that could shake even the strongest, best-laid faith in our Presidential election process. It would be a race between corruption and ignorance (the taint of each also infecting the other side to some degree) with laundry lists of bureaucratic handouts on both sides.

God help us if our fate comes down to those two.

Rhetoric Vs. Record

Glenn posts:

TAYLOR OWEN thinks Huckabee may be okay.
How can that be? Owen writes:

I haven't had the chance to read much about Huckabee yet...
Therein lies the problem and the origin of Huckabee's rise in the polls. Owen's statement could probably be said by at least 70% of people polled. Debates and interviews showcase the easy speech and charisma of Huckabee, but some reading into the record takes that shine right off.

Love as Beasts Do and Rise Above Nature

Is that the argument Dawkins is making here? Somehow it's elevating to succumb to every sexual whim, to favor lust over jealousy? To ignore oaths rendered is a higher path? Treachery for the sake of sexual pleasure is justified? Self-control and order in sexual relations are of no value?

He's not very convincing.

I heard Obama once took another kid's pail in the sandbox...

... even though he doesn't admit to being a thief.

In third grade, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want To Be a President.' His third grade teacher: Fermina Katarina Sinaga "asked her class to write an essay titled 'My dream: What I want to be in the future.' Senator Obama wrote 'I want to be a President,' she said." [The Los Angeles Times, 3/15/07]

In kindergarten, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want to Become President.' "Iis Darmawan, 63, Senator Obama's kindergarten teacher, remembers him as an exceptionally tall and curly haired child who quickly picked up the local language and had sharp math skills. He wrote an essay titled, 'I Want To Become President,' the teacher said." [AP, 1/25/07 ]
Seriously, if your campaign is making this part of a character issue, what does that say about your own character or your own conception of character? To me it indicates that you haven't the vaguest notion of what character is.
